CURRENCY
The currency of South Africa is the South African Rand but while we recommend you carry some cash around with you in small denominations, South Africa has a superb network of ATM bank tellers, all over the country even in the more remote areas of the country, all Visa and Mastercard debit and credit cards are widely accepted. Just remember to make sure that international withdrawal and transactions are activated on your cards before leaving home.
MALARIA
South Africa's Greater Kruger National Park region is considered a malaria risk area so anti-malaria medication is recommended for safaris in this region. You should start anti-malarial medication at least a week before leaving for your trip. Added precautions such as long-sleeved shirts and long pants for wearing in the evenings will reduce your chances of mosquito bites. While all camps and lodges have insect repellant in their rooms, it's a good idea to pack some mosquito repellent, cream or spray, for applying to your hands, face and neck. This will help prevent bites.
SAFETY & SECURITY
Crime is an issue the world over - especially opportunistic petty crime like pickpocketing, so when out and about in South Africa, keep your valuables with you at all times. Do not make any cash you may have on you obvious and keep your wallet out of sight and secure when you're not using it. Feel free to tip when you feel the service warrants it - 10% of the bill is the norm.
Don't leave valuables on display in a vehicle or in your hotel room. Use safes when these are provided and when they aren't, lock your valuables away in your luggage or keep them with you at all times.
Our priority is your safety but we also want you to feel safe and secure wherever you go. Ask any questions or raise any concerns and we will be delighted to set your minds at ease.
When you are out on safari, remember that the South African wilderness is not a zoo and its animals are wild and, in some cases, dangerous. You will have qualified, experienced guides with you on game activities to help you understand each species and how best to react around them. As a rule, do not stand up in the safari vehicle, do not make a lot of noise and do not alight unless at an appropriate point and with the permission of your guide.
Each camp will give you a safety briefing on arrival. Please stay within the confines of the lodges or camps you stay in, follow their rules properly and enjoy your incredible African safari!
